How to view the headers of an email

In order to understand the path a message took to reach its destination and the time taken for delivery, it is helpful to view the headers of the email message. Follow these steps to assist you to locate the headers.

If you want to inform us of spam mail that you are receiving, it is helpful to copy this information into a mail. (highlight all the header text, then press Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste/ Cmd on a Mac).

Webmail:

  1. Browse to the Webmail login page (https://webmail.konsoleh.co.za)
  2. Enter your email address and email password.
  3. Select the required email
  4. Select More from the top menu bar
  5. Select Show Source
  6. A new window or tab will open which will display the full message headers

Outlook

  1. Click on the Outlook icon to open this mail client.
  2. Double click on the email for which you would like to view the headers. The message will open in a new window.
  3. Select File then Info
  4. Select Properties
  5. The message headers will show in the Internet headers box.

Outlook (2007):

  1. Click on the Outlook icon to open this mail client.
  2. From the top menu select the Message tab, then Options.
  3. Select the Dialog Box Launcher icon image.
  4. In the Message Options, the message headers will show in the Internet headers box.

Other Outlook versions:

  1. Click on the Outlook icon to open this mail client.
  2. Select and open the relevant email.
  3. Choose the View menu then Options.
  4. A new window will open with the email message headers.

Outlook Express:

  1. Click on the Outlook Express icon to open this mail client.
  2. Select the relevant email by right-clicking.
  3. Click on Properties from the menu that appears.
  4. Select Details from the menu.
  5. The headers will then appear.

Mozilla Thunderbird:

  1. Click on the icon to open this mail client.
  2. Select and open the relevant email.
  3. Click on the main menu and select View
  4. Select Headers > all

Gmail:

  1. Access your Gmail account.
  2. Select and open the relevant email.
  3. From the top right-hand side of the message pane, next to the Reply option, select the down arrow.
  4. Click on Show original.
  5. A new window will open with the email message headers.

Mac Mail (Mac OS X):

  1. Open Mail and select the relevant email.
  2. Click the View menu at the top.
  3. Select Message, then Raw Source.
