These tasty morsels are words of wisdom and advice from over 200 leaders in their field.&nbsp; The Heavy Chef community is currently around 45,000 members strong.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fred Roed, CEO and founder of Heavy Chef, has a deep understanding of the South African entrepreneur scene. We asked him what the most surprising recent changes are \u2013 here\u2019s what he had to say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over to Fred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been two decades of hard technological advancements. In this environment, it\u2019s important to remember the soft stuff. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of partnerships<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world is crazy right now. There\u2019s a pandemic raging outside, and havoc being wreaked on economies and society as a whole. In this environment, understanding technology platforms is important. Understanding partnerships even more so.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy Chef recently engaged in a long-term partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/xneelo.co.za\/\">xneelo<\/a>, focusing on inspiring and empowering entrepreneurs in South Africa and beyond. It\u2019s such a privilege to be engaging with the xneelo community again. I have a long history with the company, from way back when I ran a tiny digital marketing agency in the early 2000s. In those days <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/xneelo.co.za\/insights\/hetzner-is-now-xneelo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">xneelo was called \u2018Hetzner\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it was immediately striking to interact with the team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital-first, way back when<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back then, my agency \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Wide Creative<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 was part of the early crop of digital-first agencies. The traditional agency folks were a little bemused by our group of young techno-heads. We spoke about things like \u2018always-on communication\u2019 and \u2018many-to-many conversations\u2019.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketing people in boardrooms were partly intimidated by us, partly annoyed by us \u2013 mainly because they had no clue what we were talking about most of the time. Much of the time, neither did we<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We were certainly a lot more confident about the new technologies than the traditional agencies. Traditional agencies were hesitant to embrace our digital gospel because they didn\u2019t need to: their business model was working beautifully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It went something like this:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"margin-left: 1em;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agency salesperson secures a portion of a corporate budget.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said budget goes towards securing a young, hungry and hyper-talented creative team.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This team is fed with alcohol and pizza, coaxed to working overtime in order to come up with the \u2018big idea\u2019.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After several \u2018reverts\u2019, the big idea is approved and then manipulated into marketing collateral.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The marketing collateral \u2013 made up of one television commercial, at least three print ads, some outdoor signage and three radio ads \u2013 is then flighted on television, print, outdoor and radio.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This flighting is billed on a conveyor belt of neatly stacked media channels for anything from 3 months to a year, or more.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional agency celebrates the 18% commission on their client\u2019s media spend by consuming more alcohol and pizza, while the agency \u2018special division\u2019 hastily assembles a slew of award submissions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This \u2018digital thing\u2019 was not good when viewed through the lens of five decades of ever-increasing profit. I go into more detail about how disruptive digital really was, here:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TQ1jalG6XVY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" align=\"center\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital start-ups<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My agency, World Wide Creative, which I co-founded with Mike Perk, came hot on the heels of a host of other digital agencies back then: Aqua, Cambrient, Trigger, Hellocomputer, Quirk, Electric Ocean, Prezence. It was tough going. We were clearly not welcome in this heady world of established systems.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market was both suspicious and fascinated, in equal measures. In those turbulent times, we saw a number of digital start-ups fall by the wayside.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong relationships with strong partners<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was therefore critical that we had strong relationships with strong partners. This brings me back to our first interaction with xneelo. I recall the first time I phoned the support department and spoke to a consultant. A woman answered. I was surprised. I had phoned other suppliers and every time I spoke with a sublimely difficult-to-understand geeky male. In contrast, this consultant was lucid and friendly.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note for younger readers: In today\u2019s slightly more progressive times, it\u2019s not totally unusual for tech support to be \u2018manned\u2019 by women, but back then in South Africa it was utterly revolutionary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had been so used to prickly conversations that speaking to my xneelo counterpart was a breath of fresh air. In a world of baffling technospeak, this affable consultant managed to cut through the confusing aspects of hosting (believe me, back then it was pretty mind-bending) and infuse clarity, order and trust. I immediately felt comfortable and (despite the fact that I was sort of techno-savvy myself) smarter.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We signed up with xneelo after that phone call, right at the beginning of our journey through the treacherous marketing hallways of South Africa.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also took on board an important lesson that day:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf we can make our clients feel comfortable and smarter, we will be far more likely to sign them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make your clients feel comfortable and smarter<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It worked. World Wide Creative grew to become one of the top ten agencies in the country, and one of the largest on the continent. Our clients included Vodafone, The Foschini Group, RMB, FNB and City of Cape Town.
