Status and power states of cloud instances
As you create and manage instances, you will need to understand the instance status and power states. These states help you identify whether an instance is operational, encountering issues, or undergoing specific actions like resizing or rebooting.
This article provides a definition of each state and explains the steps to view the current state of your instance in the cloud dashboard.
View instance power state
The instance power state indicates whether an instance is running or not.
Steps
To view the current power state of an instance:
-
1Navigate to Compute > Instances.
-
2In the Instance table, find the instance you want to view.
-
3The current Power State will be displayed.
An instance may exist in one of the following power states:
Power state | Description |
Running | The instance is powered up and is running properly. |
Paused | The instance is running in a frozen state, the state of the instance is stored in memory. |
No State | Instance is running, but it encountered some fatal errors. A relaunch is required |
Shut Down | The instance has been powered down completely. |
Crashed | The instance has powered down due to a fatal error. |
Suspended | The instance has been blocked by the system administrator. |
View instance status
The status indicates the current condition or activity of an instance. As you perform actions on an instance, the status will change.
Steps
To view the current status of an instance:
-
1Navigate to Compute > Instances.
-
2In the Instance table, find the instance you want to view.
-
3The current Status will be displayed.
An instance may reflect the following statuses:
Status | Description |
Active | The instance is up and running and is accessible for use. |
Build | The instance is being built and provisioned on the physical hardware. |
Shutoff | The instance has been intentionally powered off by the user. |
Error | The instance is in an error state. This could be due to a variety of issues, such as configuration problems, resource constraints, or failures during launch. |
Paused | The instance has been temporarily paused, and its state is saved. It can be unpaused and resumed later. |
Migrate | The instance is being migrated from one physical host to another, usually for load balancing or maintenance purposes. |
Resize | The instance is shut down, rebuilt to the new flavor size, then restarted. |
Confirm/Revert | The instance is awaiting action to be taken, e.g. resizing and migration. You can continue by using the Actions menu to the right to Confirm or Revert the action. |
Locked (icon) | The instance is locked and only admin users can perform certain actions. |
