Does xneelo support Magento?

Magento’s system requirements impacts future support

While it is possible to make use of Magento on our Managed Hosting platform, it has become increasingly difficult to ensure full compatibility with all its system requirements, since the buy-out of Magento by Adobe and the release of their proprietary Adobe commerce platform:

  • The 2GB memory requirement (to perform certain installation and update operations) exceeds our default memory limits for PHP and creates a support overhead.
  • Changes to the requirements and operation of the database backend have caused problems for customers during our routine database upgrade processes.
  • Changes to system requirements and features such as Elasticsearch create incompatibilities with our platform that hinders routine upgrade and maintenance operations on our hosting platform.

The above, as well as the fact that we have seen a significant reduction in the amount of Magento installations (below 0.1% of websites hosted on our Managed Hosting platform) makes it hard to justify support for the platform into the future.

Market trends indicate WooCommerce as a growing player in the e-commerce market and we would like to encourage Magento users to consider migration of their shops to WooCommerce on one of our Wordpress hosting options. If this is not desirable, then moving hosting to a dedicated Magento hosting provider may be in your best interest.

Next PHP upgrade also has an effect on Magento stores

Magento versions higher than 2.4.4 are compatible with PHP 8.0 and higher, however, now have Elasticsearch as a prerequisite. Elasticsearch is a service that is not available on our Managed Hosting product offering.

To avoid disruption to your website, we request that our customers, with the guidance of their Magento developer, take action before 5 December 2022 and consider various options to continue to be able to run Magento on our platform.

Considerations for Magento customers

These options retain compatibility with our Managed Hosting platform:

  • Sign up for the hosting of Elasticsearch from a dedicated external provider, or Opensearch from Amazon Web Services
    • This service will come at an additional cost to customers and we are unable to offer support to either install or maintain the solution. This option provides a future-proofed solution that aligns with the Adobe commerce platform.
  • Install the legacy mysql supported plugin from Swiss Up Labs
    • This is a short-term fix and support as well as sustainability depends on the plugin provider. xneelo will not be able to support installation or activation.

If none of these options work out or are desirable, then the following can also be considered:

  • Move to one of our Self-Managed Server options, where you can retain complete control of your software, including Magento
  • Migrate to an alternative e-commerce platform, for example our new Managed WordPress e-commerce product or standard WordPress with WooCommerce
  • Move to a dedicated Magento hosting provider

We strive to support our customers’ needs and will update this article with any new developments.
