While we have DDoS Mitigation in place, occasionally we experience new types of attacks that test our limits. A recent DNS DDoS attack took us 2 hours to resolve, but similar subsequent attacks were resolved for most of our customers within 10 minutes.
On Wed 30 November 2016 at 12h00, we experienced a major DDoS attack on our authoritative name servers. Our DNS infrastructure was put under significant strain, resulting in connectivity issues to our own and our customer’s websites.
After analysing the attack, we were able to implement measures that largely neutralised the impact. Initially all international traffic was restricted, but then narrowed down to only the offending IP range and ports.
When the same type of attack was launched against our DNS again a few days later, our engineers were able to resolve the issue within 10 minutes.
As a next step, we are busy implementing further DNS specific mitigation technologies and redesigning the distributed architecture of our DNS environment. It remains our firm commitment to provide you with a hosting service you can trust.
