Windows Server 2016, the latest server operating system from Microsoft, includes a wide range of improvements over its predecessor, Windows Server 2012. It is now available as one of the OS options for our Self-Managed servers.
Features
Windows 2016 introduces the following new and improved features:
- Improved Virtualisation services to assist in the design, deployment and maintenance of Windows Server.
- Improved Windows Container Support
- New Hyper-V Features including hot swap network adaptors and memory while the VM is running
- Updated Nano Server
- Shielded Virtual-Machines
- Improved identity and access features, including updates to the Active Directory Certificate, Domain & Federation Services
- Administration features such as an updated Windows PowerShell
- Improved TCP performance
- Updated Security features includes updates to Windows Defender & Credential Guard
- Improvements to storage features, including a new feature called Storage Spaces Direct which allows you to build highly available and scalable storage using servers with local storage

Licencing
Licence fees remain the same as for previous versions. Note that Windows Server 2016 only offers per core licensing, unlike previous versions which offered both per core or per CPU licensing options.
