PTR – Reverse DNS
PTR records (Pointer records) are a type of DNS (Domain Name System) record used for reverse DNS lookups.
PTR records map an IP address to a domain name. This is the reverse of A (IPv4) or AAAA (IPv6) records, which map a domain name to an IP address. This enables identifying the hostname associated with a given IP address.
Common use cases for PTR records include:
- Email server verification: A valid PTR record can help verify the legitimacy of an email sender and reduce spam.
- Network diagnostics and security: PTR records allow DNS administrators and network tools to trace IP addresses back to hostnames, aiding in monitoring and troubleshooting.
