Fastly CDN discontinuation FAQ

We will be discontinuing our Fastly CDN service from 30 July 2025. As an alternative, we’re offering our new Cache feature (part of our Web Accelerator) for free during its limited release. Read on to learn more about this change and your options.

  • Why is Fastly CDN being discontinued?

While initially promising, Fastly CDN adoption has not reached the level required to make it a sustainable product offering. For this reason, we have decided to discontinue offering the Fastly CDN product.

  • What does this mean for my website?

Fastly CDN will be removed from your website(s) on 30 July 2025. The removal of Fastly CDN from your website can slow down load times, especially for global users.

  • What actions should I take?

    You have the following options:

    1. You may activate Cache on your website as an alternative.
    2. You may cancel Fastly CDN and move to a different CDN provider.
    3. If you do not wish to activate Cache, please cancel Fastly CDN by 30 July 2025.

Note: Xneelo will cancel all active CDN instances on 30 July 2025. If you are not using our name servers your site could experience downtime until you update the DNS to point back to your hosting server.

  • How much does Cache cost?

Our Cache feature is currently available at no additional cost during its limited release. Should pricing be introduced in the future, we’ll be sure to notify you well in advance.

  • Can I use Cache and my own CDN at the same time?

Yes, you can still use Cache with your preferred CDN. Cache optimises content at the server level, while your CDN focuses on delivering content quickly from distributed locations. Using both together can enhance your website’s performance by improving both server response and global delivery speeds.

  • What does the Cache feature offer?

Cache is a temporary storage mechanism that helps speed up data retrieval by storing frequently accessed content closer to the user. When a visitor accesses your website, Cache stores a copy of the page. Subsequent visitors will receive this stored copy, leading to faster load times.

  • How do Fastly CDN and Cache differ?

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) and our Cache feature enhance website performance and speed, but they serve different purposes and operate in distinct ways.

The table below shows the key differences between a CDN and Cache:

    Feature CDN Cache
Primary Function Distributes web content across multiple servers in different locations to reduce latency. Caches frequently requested web content to reduce load times and server strain.
Scope Works on a global or regional scale, optimising content delivery for users worldwide. Typically operates at the server or network level, focusing on optimising request handling and load times.
Location Uses multiple edge servers in various geographic locations. Usually implemented on a single server, proxy, or application layer.
Caching Method Stores copies of website resources (images, videos, scripts, HTML pages) in geographically distributed servers. Stores copies of website resources (images, videos, scripts, HTML pages) on a caching service in a location close to the origin server.
Use Case Best for handling global traffic, reducing latency, and distributing load. Best for optimising web application performance, reducing redundant processing, and improving response times.

How to choose between CDN and Cache

    • Use a CDN if you have a global audience and want to deliver content faster by distributing it closer to users.
    • Use Cache if you need to optimise performance on a specific web server or application without placing copies of cacheable content around the world.
