How to change file and folder permissions via the xneelo Control Panel
File and folder permissions control who can access, view or make changes to your website files and folders.
Most websites use default permissions that don’t need to be changed. However, you may need to update them when installing an application or resolving a website error.
You can change these permissions using the File Manager in your xneelo Control Panel. Your updated permissions will determine who can access or modify the selected file or folder.
What permissions should I use?
For most websites, the recommended default permissions are:
| Type | Permission | What it means |
| Files | 644 | The owner can read and edit the file. Others can only read it. |
| Folders | 755 | The owner can access and modify the folder. Others can access the folder and view its contents, subject to file permissions. |
Steps
-
1
-
2Select a Product (e.g. Web Hosting or Managed Servers) from the side menu.
-
3Search for and select your domain name.
-
4Under Hosting Tools, select File Manager.
-
5Locate the file or folder you want to update. Your website files are usually found in the public_html folder.
-
6Select the three-dot menu to the right of the file or folder.
-
7Select Change permissions.
-
8Choose the permissions you want to apply by selecting the appropriate boxes. Only change permissions if you know which settings are required.
-
9Click Update to save the changes.
Important: Avoid setting permissions to 777, as this allows all users to read, write and execute, which can put your website at risk.
Only change permissions when necessary, and follow the instructions provided by your website application or developer.
